Golfing on the Murray

By March 1, 2019 No Comments

I have just finished a wonderful week of golf which saw me playing golf courses at Swan Hill, Berri, and Loxton.

If you are looking for a relaxing place to enjoy your golf then you need to look no further than Murray Downs at Swan Hill.

The Murray Downs Golf course at Swan Hill has to be rated as one of the best golf courses you will find in Australia. It is challenging ( its slope rating of 129 confirms this ) and the course is maintained to a standard which any golfer would appreciate.

For the last 10 years the Club has held a Seniors event in the last week of February for over 50's and it attracts a full field with an AM and a PM shotgun start. I have attended the event for the last three years now and have already booked in for next year's event. Registration for the event includes green fees, lunches both days, and a Dinner on the Monday night. It is great value!

The Pro Shop at Murray Downs is also one of the best equipped shops I have seen at a golf course in many years. The shop is run by Shane McHenry who has an impressive and varied resume. hop

In Shane's words the biggest hurdle facing him is to convince The Murray Downs Members that the prices in the Pro Shop are actually on a par with prices found online or at stores like Drummonds. This is a dilemma facing many Pro Shops and I implore Murray Downs members to support their local Pro Shop and to return the support that Shane and his friendly, enthusiastic team gives to the Club.

There are rooms available next to the Course but I also would like to recommend the accommodation we have stayed at for the last two years. Just a kilometre down the road you will find the Murray Downs Marina which has ( moored ) houseboats for hire at bargain prices. Sitting on the deck of the houseboat at the end of the day just completed the relaxation experience I was looking for. Our group of four guys hired a houseboat with four bedrooms, two bathrooms, spa, upstairs deck, full kitchen, and a BBQ, of course! Gary and Jo Jeans are very friendly hosts and will make sure that your stay is hassle free. To complete the experience there is a community bus that runs past the door to take into Swan Hill or to the Murray Downs Golf Course. How good is that! We will certainly be booking it again next year. This is the link to their website http://www.murraydownsmarina.com.au/

To break up the trip back to Adelaide we headed to Berri on the River Murray in South Australia. The Berri Golf Course has always been a favourite and it was great to experience it once again.

When staying at Berri I recommend the onsite cabins at the Berri Caravan Park. We hired two 2-bedroom cabins which was ideal . The real highlight though was the magnificent Mini Golf course at the Park. It has only been open a few months but it has to rate as the best mini golf course I have played. Check out my blog on the attraction.

To finish off our week of golf headed to the Loxton Golf Course. In my opinion it must be one of the most interesting golf courses in the Riverland. Every tee, fairway, and green was maintained perfectly and is a credit to the greenkeepers at the Club. The hospitality at the Clubhouse was also very enjoyable.

Time to head home for a rest!
